St. Matthews White Castle demolished
The Courier-Journal, August 6, 2006
The old St. Matthews White Castle building on Shelbyville Road at Chenoweth Lane was demolished Tuesday to make way for a new Eclipse Bank. Bank President John Pendergrass said earlier that Eclipse wants to construct a two-story, 5,062-square-foot bank at the intersection. The existing building, which has 2,028 square feet, has been vacant since the restaurant closed about four years ago. Ground was broken for the bank project in May. Plans call for the bank to be built where the White Castle building stands, with a 35-space parking lot to the west, which is a similar configuration to the current building. The locally owned bank is operating temporarily out of space at 135 Chenoweth Lane. The restaurant closed in April 2002. It had been open on the site since May 1, 1939. Part of the decision to close the restaurant was based on the fact that the oddly shaped intersection prevented the chain from installing a drive-thru window on the site, company officials said at the time. The bank hopes to be open by the end of the year, according to its Web site.
